Artificial Intelligence, Digital Transformation and Sustainability: Emerging Opportunities and Challenges for Social Work and Community Well-Being

Abstract

The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI), digital transformation, and sustainability is reshaping societies and creating new possibilities for addressing complex social challenges. These developments have significant implications for the field of social work, particularly in relation to social service delivery, community development, social inclusion, and the well-being of vulnerable and marginalized populations. AI-driven tools and digital technologies can support social workers in identifying community needs, improving access to welfare services, strengthening evidence-based decision-making, and reaching under-served populations, particularly those living in remote and disadvantaged communities. Digital platforms also offer new opportunities for online counselling, awareness generation, community engagement, and the delivery of social support services. At the same time, the growing dependence on technology raises important concerns related to the digital divide, unequal access to digital resources, digital literacy, data privacy, ethical use of AI, and the risk of further social exclusion. These challenges are particularly relevant for vulnerable groups who may already face barriers to accessing essential services. Furthermore, the increasing impact of climate change and environmental degradation highlights the need to integrate sustainability and resilience into social work practice and community development initiatives. This paper critically examines the emerging opportunities and challenges associated with AI, digital transformation, and sustainability from a social work perspective. It explores how these three interconnected forces can contribute to more inclusive, accessible, and sustainable social services while also considering the ethical and social risks they may create. The paper emphasizes the need for a human-centred approach in which technological innovation is guided by the core principles of social work, including social justice, equality, dignity, participation, and respect for human rights. It argues that the meaningful integration of technology and sustainability into social work can strengthen community resilience, promote social inclusion, and contribute to improved well-being. However, this transformation must be inclusive, ethical, and people-centred to ensure that technological progress becomes a means of advancing social development rather than creating new forms of inequality.
